It was the first night of the Blessing Way
Her brothers drove from Guadalupe
She came back home to say good-bye for now
She came back home to slip away

She’d joined the army with her oldest friend
Was bound for travel overseas
She came back home to taste the sweet embrace
She knew there were no guarantees

Now bless this one who is sung over

Carry this soul across the river
And bring her home in health we pray

Tonight the family came together
To Mark the sacred blessing way,
The healer knew the ceremony
He knew the songs and what to say


He’d helped his father cross the four winds home
He sang the songs of healing grace
He left his presence in each mud brick home
He left each Hogan, sacred space

He placed the necklace around his shoulders
He placed the kerchief round his brow
He turned to sing the song of ages
He turned to sing the song of blessings now

He used the pollen for abundance
He used the drum to open doors
He used the cornmeal for renewal
He danced and swayed across the floor

He placed the larkspur on the buckskin
He shook his rattle through the night
He drummed his way across the river
He sang the songs to reunite
